LAF Food for Thought

May 14, 2009

I was just reminded of something from a friend – who also happens to be a former editor of a national publication.

“The only life worth living is the adventurous life. Of such a life the dominant characteristic is that it is unafraid. It is unafraid of what people think….. It does not adopt either its pace or the objectives to the pace and objectives of its neighbor. It thinks its own thoughts, it reads its own books, it develops its own hobbies, and it is governed by its own conscience. The herd may graze where it pleases or stampede where it pleases, but he who lives the adventurous life will remain unafraid when he finds himself alone.” -Raymond Blaine Fosdick

Food for thought. Do you see how we can apply it to the public relations field, as well as the journalism field?

“It thinks its own thoughts, it reads its own books, it develops its own hobbies, and it is governed by its own conscience.”

I can definitely see how this quote applies to PR. Although our reputation is often that of the “spin doctor,” we strive to be the conscience of our organization. I think that it is our job to be guided by our conscience personally and to steer the conscience of the organizations we represent.

Excellent response, Kristen. I couldn’t agree more. Thanks for reading!
